Why I Started Slate & Sand and How I Think About Homes

I didn’t start Slate & Sand because I went to design school or because I wanted to call myself a designer.

I started it because for years, people kept asking me to help with their homes.

Friends would text photos and ask, “What would you do here?”

Neighbors wanted a second opinion before making a change.

I’d walk into a house and immediately know why it felt off or what small shift would make it feel better.

At first, I brushed it off. I assumed I just had decent taste and paid attention.

Over time, I realized what people were really looking for wasn’t a trend or a dramatic transformation. They wanted clarity. They wanted help making decisions that actually made sense for their life, their budget, and their season.

That’s where Slate & Sand came from.

I’m Not Here to Over-Design Your Life

I’m a mom. I’ve lived in real houses, not show homes. I’ve made expensive mistakes, rushed decisions, and learned the hard way where restraint matters more than adding more.

I don’t believe homes need to be perfect or styled within an inch of their life. I believe they should support the season you’re in.

Sometimes that means keeping what already works.

Sometimes it means changing one or two key things.

Sometimes it means leaving a space alone and trusting it.

Not everything needs to be touched.

How I Think About Homes

When I walk into a space, I’m not thinking about what’s trending.

I’m paying attention to how it feels.

Does it feel calm or chaotic?

Does it flow or feel stuck?

Does it support the people living there or work against them?

Most homes don’t need a full remodel. They need better decisions and fewer of them.

Too many choices is usually where things fall apart. Too much inspiration. Too little confidence.

My role is often just helping someone see more clearly.

Before and after

What Slate & Sand Is (and Isn’t)

Slate & Sand isn’t about telling you what you should like or chasing whatever is popular at the moment.

It’s about helping you make choices you won’t regret six months from now.

Sometimes that looks like helping with a flip.

Sometimes it’s one room.

Sometimes it’s simply confirming that what you’re already thinking is the right call.

I’m intentional about what I take on. I want this work to stay honest, manageable, and grounded in real life, not pressure or performance.

Why This Blog Exists

This blog is where I share how I think.

Not rules. Not formulas. Just real observations from real homes and real conversations.

If you’re someone who wants your home to feel thoughtful, calm, and supportive without being overdone, you’ll probably feel comfortable here.

And if you’re just reading along and taking what helps, that’s welcome too.

Homes matter.

But how they support the people living in them matters more.
